Whot (1963) – Classic Waddingtons Card Shedding Game

Whot is one of those simple but brilliant card games that has stood the test of time. First released by Waddingtons, this 1963 classic is all about quick thinking, clever timing and trying to get rid of your cards before anyone else. With bold symbols instead of traditional suits, Whot feels different straight away – and that’s part of its charm.

It’s easy to learn, fast to play, and surprisingly strategic. Whether you remember playing it years ago or you’re discovering it for the first time, Whot is one of those games that brings everyone around the table.

How to Play

Each player is dealt six cards, and the rest form a face-down draw pile in the centre. The first player lays down a card to start the game – this becomes the “Call Card.” From there, players take turns matching either the same number or the same symbol as the Call Card. If you can’t (or choose not to), you must draw a card. The goal is simple: be the first to play your last card.

The special “Whot” cards add a fun twist. When played, they let you call out which symbol must follow next, giving you the chance to block someone who looks like they’re about to win. But be careful – Whot cards count heavily against you if you’re still holding them at the end!

Why Rent Whot?

Whot is perfect for families, mixed ages, and anyone who loves classic card games. It’s quick to set up, doesn’t take up much space, and works brilliantly as a warm-up game or something to dip into on a relaxed evening. It also has that lovely vintage feel that makes it extra special in my collection.

If you enjoy games like Uno but want something a little different and properly retro, Whot is such a great choice. Simple rules, clever play, and plenty of “oh no!” moments when someone changes the symbol at just the wrong time.
