The Old Shell Game (1974) – Trick, Bluff and Outsmart Your Opponents

The Old Shell Game, released in 1974 by Selchow & Righter, is a clever family board game based on the classic street con trick of hiding a pea under shells. Designed for 2–4 players, it’s a game of luck, strategy, and bluffing as players race to move their hidden pea across the board while trying to outwit their opponents.

How to Play

Each player begins with three shells, a hidden pea, and matching pawns on the scoreboard. On their turn, players roll the dice and move one of their shells according to the roll, either forwards, backwards, or sideways. The aim is to be the first to move the shell containing the pea all the way across the board. Along the way, players can challenge opponents’ shells by landing on the same square — forcing the other player to reveal whether the pea is hidden there or not. Correct challenges can send shells back to start, while failed ones cost the challenger points. The round ends when a player successfully carries their pea to the opposite side, and the game continues until someone scores 100 points.
