The Dickens Game (1983) – A Literary Board Game of Characters and Stories
Step into the world of Charles Dickens with this literary-inspired board game from 1983. The Dickens Game challenges players to “write” their own Dickens novel by completing six episodes, collecting characters, and managing luck, funds, and strategy along the way. With unique gameplay rooted in classic literature, it’s a wonderful mix of storytelling, decision-making, and Victorian charm.
How to Play
Each player takes on the role of an author aiming to complete a Dickens novel. To do this, you’ll need to collect matching Character cards and Idea cards that link together with quotations from Dickens’ works. Players move around the board by walking or travelling by Post Chaise, picking up Luck cards, collecting characters at Inns, and paying royalties at the Counting House. Challenges like debt, bankruptcy, and even a trip to Debtors’ Prison add twists to the journey. The winner is the first player to complete six episodes and finish their novel.
