Quicksand (1981) – The Sand-Timer Strategy Game That Races Against Time
Quicksand isn’t just a game — it’s a proper throwback to clever thinking, bold moves, and the real-time pressure of falling sand. Each player controls sand timers instead of playing pieces, and you’ll need to act fast (but smart!) to win. Every second counts as you race your timers across the board, trying to get them to your opponent’s starting row before the sand runs out. With real glass timers ticking down and a clever twist on strategy and movement, Quicksand is like no other game I’ve played — part race, part puzzle, and full-on fun.
How to Play
Each player picks four sand timers and places them at their starting edge of the tray — sand side down. The goal is to move each timer across the board and into the opponent’s starting row, while keeping the sand flowing inside. On your turn, roll the special die. You can only move a timer once you’ve rolled an “S” to start it. From there, you’ll move timers based on the number you roll, but be warned: if the sand runs out, that timer’s stuck until another “S” brings it back to life. Strategic movement is key — you can even send opponents’ timers into the danger zone if you roll wisely! The winner is the first to get all their timers across the board with sand still flowing.
Why Rent
This one’s a brilliant brain workout and a real-time laugh. It’s great for two players, brilliant with four, and it’s something completely different from your usual board game night. Kids love the timers, grown-ups love the challenge, and it’s one of those games you’ll want to keep playing again and again just to master it. Renting Quicksand gives you a chance to enjoy its clever design and fast-paced gameplay without needing to hunt down this vintage gem yourself.
