Hare and Tortoise (1973) – Classic Strategy Racing Game

Test your strategic thinking with Hare and Tortoise, the award-winning classic board game designed by David Parlett. First released in 1973, this game reimagines Aesop's timeless fable, blending strategy, resource management, and racing mechanics. Whether you dash ahead like the hare or play it slow and steady like the tortoise, careful planning is the key to crossing the finish line first.

How to Play

Setup
Each player starts with 65 carrot tokens and 3 lettuce cards. Place your runner on the starting line.

Objective
The first player to cross the finish line with no lettuces left and 10 or fewer carrots wins!

Game Mechanics

  • Number Squares: On your next turn, pay carrots equal to the square’s number multiplied by your race position.
  • Carrot Squares: Land here to collect 10 carrots (or 20 if you’re further from the finish).
  • Lettuce Squares: Discard a lettuce and skip a turn.
  • Tortoise Squares: Move backwards for a carrot reward based on the steps taken.
  • Hare Squares: Take a chance with a hare card—outcomes can help or hinder your progress!
  1. Getting Home
Land on the finish line exactly, with no remaining lettuce cards and fewer than 10 carrots, to claim victory.
