Dig (1971) – A Sticky Hammer Word Game of Gold and Giggles

Dig is a quirky and original word game from 1971 where players race to win shares in a gold mine—using little hammers! It’s fast-paced, full of wordplay, and totally different to anything else in my collection. Great fun for 2 to 4 players who love words, categories, and a bit of competition.

How to Play

Each round starts with one player acting as the caller. They turn over a calling card and read out the category—like “a type of fruit” or “something round.” Everyone then secretly thinks of a word that fits and uses their sticky hammer to collect the letters needed to spell it out. But here's the twist: you’re only allowed to use the hammer—no fingers! Each letter must be picked up in order and placed face-up in front of you, all with that tacky little hammer.

The first person to finish their word correctly wins a share in the gold mine. The first player to earn six shares wins the game! There’s also a second way to play, where players score one share per letter in their word—making longer words more valuable.

Why Rent Dig?

This game is a total throwback to the creativity of the 70s. It’s not just a word game—it’s a hands-on, think-fast, act-fast kind of game that has everyone giggling. It’s perfect for families, older kids, and adults who enjoy wordplay but don’t want anything too serious. If you're after something light-hearted, easy to learn, and totally different—Dig’s your game.
