Breaking News (2005) – A Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Board Game

Breaking News is a clever and engaging board game where players become newspaper editors racing to fix mistakes and publish their stories first. It turns spelling, punctuation and grammar into something fun rather than stressful, with a strong game feel rather than a classroom feel. Every turn feels purposeful, and it’s really satisfying when you spot the error before anyone else.

How to play

Players move around the board by rolling the dice, travelling between different newspaper departments like Entertainment, Sport, Weather, Business and Local News. When you enter a department, you draw a headline card and decide which letter or word you think is correct. Flip the card to see if you’re right. If you are, you keep the card and start building your newspaper. If not, the card goes back and play moves on. Some cards include more than one error, so careful thinking really matters. The aim is to collect one headline from each department and make your way back to the Boss’s Office.

Why rent this game

Breaking News makes learning feel natural. Kids are practising real skills without realising they’re doing it, and adults often get caught out too. It’s great for families, homeschoolers, and anyone who enjoys word games with a purpose. Renting it is a brilliant way to add something educational to game night without committing to another box on the shelf, and it works well for a wide age range.
