Backwords (1988) – The Hilarious Game of Reverse Thinking and Word Twisting
Backwords is one of those games that sounds simple but has you in stitches once you start. First released in 1988, it’s all about speaking and guessing words backwards – and trust me, it’s trickier (and funnier) than it sounds. It mixes dice rolls, word cards, strategy, and a big helping of chaos, as players try to reach the “University of Reversity” without holding any dreaded EXAM cards.
Perfect for groups, families, or parties, and especially good if you like games where being silly is part of the fun.
How to Play:
Each turn, you roll two dice and move your pawn forward or backward around the board. Depending on your roll, you’ll either read out a BACKWORDS card, pick up an EXAM card, or be sent backwards.
BACKWORDS cards contain words written in reverse – say them out loud and let the other players guess what the word is!
If you’re holding EXAM cards when you reach the University of Reversity, you’ll be “tested” by reading them all out backwards within 30 seconds.
The first player to reach the University without any EXAM cards – or get rid of them all once inside – wins!
Why Rent This Game:
Backwords 1988 is perfect for anyone who loves wordplay, party games, or just having a laugh. It’s a great one for mixed age groups and makes for a fun icebreaker too. You don’t need to be a spelling expert – just brave enough to sound daft while trying to pronounce “potato” backwards under pressure. A true hidden gem from the 80s!
